In the words of Cheng, “Our program represents the diversity, beauty, and power of Chinese Music” and we hope you will join us at our Second Annual Mid-Autumn Chinese Music Festival to appreciate the music and culture of China that can be heard and found here, in Philadelphia. Cheng is an accomplished musician who has studied at the prestigious Tsinghua University in China and currently teaches music at MLCCC. Ma Sicong once questioned in his diary, “When will things in China start to change? When can I end my exile? Nobody knows.” He used these longings for homeland to compose intricate songs, such as “Song of Homeland.” The song epitomizes the emotion and character of Ma Sicong and will be relived with the help of MLCCC’s own Steve Cheng.

It is during his time in America, where he settled after leaving China, where he composed a series of awe-inspiring songs that revolved around his homesickness. Ma Sicong, known in China as the “King of violinists” was a renowned composer forced to leave his homeland during the Cultural Revolution. One song in particular will be featured: “Song of Homeland” composed by the incredible Chinese violinist and composer, Ma Sicong. MLCCC’s Mid-Autumn Chinese Music Festival is fast-approaching! On October 6th 2012 MLCCC will be celebrating the Moon Festival with a night of fantastic music played by an accomplished ensemble of traditional Chinese instruments. Each piece will be accompanied by a short presentation that provides background information and cultural significance to each piece.Ĭheng and all of the performers have been hard at work preparing for the Festival. A total of 12 compositions, including “Mid-Autumn Moon” and Ma Sicong’s “Song of Homeland” will be played during the festival.

A wide variety of Chinese instruments will be played at the festival: Erhu (Chinese Violin), Zhong Ruan (Chinese Lute), Dizi, Xiao (Chinese Flute), Sheng (a Chinese Reed Instrument), Yangqin (Chinese Dulcimer), Hulusi (a Chinese free reed instrument), GuZheng (Chinese Zither), and Guqin (another ancient Chinese Zither instrument) will be present and will also be accompanied by various percussion and string instruments. 6 at the American Revolution Center and will feature traditional Chinese compositions, masterfully chosen and arranged by Cheng. The Mid-Autumn Chinese Music Festival will be held from 6-9 p.m. Cheng says the mission in hosting the Second Annual Mid-Autumn Chinese Music Festival is, “to introduce Chinese culture through the performance of original Chinese music and to showcase traditional Chinese instruments.” By graduate school, Cheng organized multiple musical instrument clubs and hosted a number of concerts at Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious colleges.Ĭheng now devotes his time to introducing Chinese culture to Greater Philadelphia communities through music. He is equally as successful and driven in the field of music throughout his life and studies, Steve’s passion for music and desire to share Chinese culture has remained a constant.Īt an early age Cheng began to learn the Erhu, a traditional Chinese violin, and since has expanded to other Chinese instruments like the Banhu, Jinhu, and Chinese Flute. Steve Cheng, music teacher at MLCCC and expert musician, has created an incredible evening of traditional Chinese music to share with people of all cultures in Greater Philadelphia.Ĭheng is a technologist by trade with multiple degrees in science, engineering, and liberal arts.
