Probably you won't find quality ones in a hardware store, though. and spiral point taps are super nice, even though they don't "bottom" in general as- produced. However, making a spiral POINT tap is hard with 4 or even 3 flutes, compared with 2. a 4 flute tap is much easier to keep straight, and a taper 4 flute tap is even better. On a small tap, two flutes, even with a lot of thread area, you can get them off-angle easier in the direction of the cutaway than in the direction of the land. The AMOUNT of thread surface and where it is has a LOT to do with how bellmouthed you get the hole when hand tapping, though. The number of flutes has little to do with the "quality".
